Digital citizenship and responsibility encompasses many facets. It begins with educators as we bridge the gap between our schools’ Acceptable Use Policies and our students’ grasp of internet safety by incorporating internet safety into our instruction. We also need to ensure that we lead by example as well as by instruction by modeling appropriate digital citizenship and responsibility in our own use of technology and in our instructional lessons.
In addition to teaching our students how to use digital resources safely and responsibly, we need to work to ensure equitable access to these digital tools and opportunities for our students. Although we cannot change what our students have available in their homes, we can ensure equitable access while at school, even if that means making resources available after hours, and can increase awareness of and promote use of community resources and opportunities that may help bridge whichever digital divide(s) present the biggest challenge(s) for our students.
